Dear Families:

Welcome to a new academic year at Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary!  As many of our families may know, we are an AVID Elementary site.  AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, supports students in learning how to “do” school. By using success skills daily, students become proactive learners who take responsibility for their learning. Currently, AVID is available as an elective in our middle and high schools. Our site is among the first elementary sites to implement AVID Elementary for students in grades 4-5, and we are both excited and optimistic about the future of our students as we enter into our third year of implementation.  This year, Lonnie B. Nelson will be featured as an AVID Showcase School!

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID Elementary classrooms encourage:

  • Organizational tool accountability and responsibility
  • Use of agenda/planner to foster a “Begin with the End in Mind” mentality
  • SMART goal-setting skills
  • Time management skills
  • Note-taking strategies (STAR)
  • Collaborative learning
  • Effective reading strategies for comprehension
  • Building community with open communication

This year, we will focus on organization. All fourth graders will use a 7-pocket plastic expanding file folder for their organizational tool.  All fifth graders will use a 3-ring binder.  The use of these materials will help our fourth- and fifth-grade students organize their materials and be prepared daily.

We look forward to empowering students with habits, behaviors, and strategies necessary for lifelong success.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Martay Monroe at 736-8730 ext. 3105 or mmonroe@richland2.org.

Sincerely,

The 4/5 Lonnie B. Nelson AVID Team
